Lessons have been assigned to them based on their diagnostic test results both in Math and Reading. Within each lesson are brain break games. The district is pushing a goal of 45 minutes per week on Online Lessons in ELA and 45 minutes per week in Math to close the gaps found in the diagnostic. Math and ELA are providing some of that time during the week, but not all.

Name the document:

"First Name Last Name TREE MASK"

Click SAVE

How many layers are there?

Select the Tree Layer

Choose SELECT (at the top) then SUBJECT

That will cause Photoshop to make a selection around the tree.

It's a pretty rough selection

Turn the selection into a layer mask

At the bottom of the layers panel, click on the layer mask button

Now we have a layer mask

There is still quite a bit of white around the edges of the tree

This is ok because we are going to be able to refine that in our select and mask workspace

Select and Mask Workspace

This is a separate interface from regular Photoshop

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE LAYER MASK SELECTED NOT THE IMAGE THUMBNAIL

(You should see a WHITE box around it!)

Go to SELECT (at the top)

Choose SELECT AND MASK

New tools/Properties

In Select and Mask mode, there are alternate tools and properties

Choose how we view...

A good place to start, is to select how we want to view our mask

Click the View pull down in the properties panel

Select On Layers

Radius

Take a look around the edges of the tree, we can see there is a lot of white there.

Drag the RADIUS slider to the right (to about 140)

What happened?

Refine Edge Brush Tool

There is still a lot of white on the INSIDE of the tree. Let's choose the Refine Edge Brush Tool

Change the brush size to around 200 (large!)

Now simply start dragging over the tree

Notice that now we can start to see through the tree to the lake

Notice the trunk and bottom are also refined!

Final step

Once we are happy with the mask, we need to output a refined layer mask

On the right, go to output setting and click on output to

Choose New Layer with Layer mask

Now

We now have two layer masks

The original and the REFINED layer Mask!

If you click on the refined mask, you can see a lot more detail!
