WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Adobe Illustrator

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor and design program developed and marketed by Adobe Inc. Originally designed for the Apple Macintosh, development of Adobe Illustrator began in 1985.

HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED:  You will practice different tools and techniques and gradually show your success!

DRAWN IN ILLUSTRATOR!

Example...Does this look familiar???

LET'S TOUR ILLUSTRATOR!

Open Adobe Illustrator from your Desktop!

Adobe Illustrator

<On the left,

select THIS PC then DESKTOP then ARTS and MEDIA FOLDER

Click SELECT FOLDER (Bottom right)

In the downloads box, click the  CHANGE button

NOW, we need to grab a file first!

Click the AI Image on the left!

This SHOULD save the file to your ARTS and MEDIA folder (on your desktop)!

Quick Tip! After you click the download button, notice on the top right corner the download should appear...simply click the file to open!

Adobe Illustrator

or Let's open Adobe Illustrator now

On your desktop...you can double click (click click) the Illustrator icon (shown left) or

Click the windows icon on the bottom left of your screen and a list of programs will appear

Click on Adobe Illustrator

With Illustrator open, you can open a file by choosing file in the menus above and then OPEN or OPEN on the Left hand side!

This is also where you can start a new file but we'll do that later!

_____________________________________

Let's open the file we downloaded!

Click OPEN

On the left of the screen that pops up, click DESKTOP

If DESKTOP does not show up, click (on the left) THIS PC...then on the right look for DESKTOP and (left) Double click (click click!)

Double (left) click the file Tour1.ai

Note: The .ai is considered the files suffix. This is how the computer knows what type of file it is!

View...Fit all in Window

With Tour1.ai open you'll usually want to make sure that you can see all of the document content

To do that choose view… fit all in window

or press (the shortcut) ALT+CTRL+0

Note: You might notice on each tab, alot of the items listed for your to try have to the right a "shortcut"

Now all of the Artboards should "fit in window"...you can see them all!

^Open document Area

Now the workspace is made-up of an Open Document Area in the document window you see here

^Menus above

The Menus above

(There are more above and I will show those soon!)

^Tools Panel

The Basic Tools Panel

This toolbar is displayed by default when Illustrator is launched. It includes a selective set of tools that you frequently need while working on Illustrator.

^Advanced Tools Panel

Advanced Tools Panel

This toolbar includes all the tools available in Illustrator. To switch from the Basic toolbar to Advanced, do one of the following:

Choose Windows > Toolbars > Advanced.

Select Advanced in the flyout menu of the drawer.

The Basic toolbar is replaced with the Advanced toolbar.

^Docked Panels

Docked Panels

On the right are docked panels like Properties, Layers and Libraries.

Panels can move!

As we explore Illustrator...

You'll find that you can move parts of this workspace to have things you use all the time easily accessible or maybe to show more of the artwork you're working on and fewer tools and panels

Tools...

On the left, hover over individual tools and Illustrator tells you what the tool is and what it does!

If you click the LEARN MORE button, a DISCOVER popup box appears to explain the tool a bit more thoroughly! (including step by step instructions!)

Click on the ellipse tool...

Tools you can use to create and edit...

Some of the tools have a little arrow in the corner which means there are more tools you can choose from.

For instance pressing hold on the rectangle tool here to show MORE tools you can choose from!

Click the ellipse tool (looks like an oval) and notice that the menu of extra tools is now hidden and the ellipse tool is selected!

Selection Tool...

At the top of the tools panel, is the SELECTION TOOL

This is used ALOT to do things like select items or move content.

Go ahead and select the Selection Tool (it looks like a BLACK ARROW)

With the Selection Tool active...

Come out to the document and click in this rectangle to select it

The item will have a thin blue selection line around it.

Making a change...

Now suppose you want to change the color of this rectangle if you look in the properties panel to the right of the document you'll see options available for the content you select like its position and size appearance properties like the fill color here.

Click the fill color (in the properties panel) and select another color to fill it with you can then press escape or click on the gray open area to hide the color panel.

NOW...take a few minutes to explore!

Your turn!

Try changing the color of other items in this document

Try changing items you see in the Properties box

Did you try something and not see a change?

Next time we will be learning more about that Tools Panel!

(Hint...Take a look now! Just for fun!)

When we are done, we are NOT saving this document!

Simply click the X at the top right corner the program itself. (Click NO)

Clicking the X in the top right corner of the document closes just the document and Illustrator stays open. (See below)

Clicking the X in the top right corner of the program closes the program. (See below)

To save computer memory for other students using the computers....

We will CLOSE THE PROGRAM!
