Lessons have been assigned to them based on their diagnostic test results both in Math and Reading. Within each lesson are brain break games. The district is pushing a goal of 45 minutes per week on Online Lessons in ELA and 45 minutes per week in Math to close the gaps found in the diagnostic. Math and ELA are providing some of that time during the week, but not all.

Learning to use Layers makes managing your content faster and easier!

Create a new layer, add artwork to that layer, and change some properties for the layer...

Working with layers in the layers panel is useful in a lot of ways including for example when you have different elements in an icon or a logo that you need to work on individually without affecting the other elements.

For this poster, you'll create a background shape and then create a layer to more easily select the content later.

Layers Panel

To access the layers in the document you'll open the layers panel… so choose WINDOW then LAYERS

Every new document in illustrator starts with one layer you see here named "Layer 1"

Changing names

Changing layer names, including the default layer, can make it easier to keep track of which content is on each layer especially in documents that have multiple layers.

To change the layer name, double (left) click the layer named “Layer 1” .

In the dialog box, change the name to “Content”

Press Enter or click OK to accept the name

You can name your layers anything that makes sense to you.

Press Ctrl + S to SAVE!!! Do this often!

New Layer

Now you’ll create a new layer where you'll add a background color to the poster which in this case will make the text more readable.

Putting the background color on its own layer is also helpful because it allows you to hide select and edit the background more easily.

To make a new layer at the very bottom of the layers panel on the right, click the create new layer button

The new layer is added to the layers panel and named something generic like "Layer 2"

Also notice that this new layer is ABOVE the "content" layer in the layers panel

Double click the new layer name and change the name to “Background” then press enter (return) or click OK

NOTE: Notice each new layer is also a different color. This can be changed if needed (there is a reason...but we can discuss that later!)

Click OK

Press Ctrl + S to SAVE!!! Do this often!

Adding content...

With the layer selected (and you can tell it's selected because it is highlighted) you'll add content to it.

Selecting a layer in the layers panel tells Illustrator to place new content you add onto THAT layer.

To add a new shape to the new layer

Select the rectangle tool in the tools panel on the left

In the document starting in the upper left corner of the artboard click and drag to the lower right corner of the artboard to create a rectangle that covers the entire artboard

Press Ctrl + S to SAVE!!! Do this often!

Change the color...

To change the color fill of the selected shape...

Click on the Properties Panel on the right (near the Layers panel)

Click the fill color (make sure the Swatch is option is selected) and select the color PURPLE to fill the shape

Arranging Layers...

With the shape still selected, click the layers panel tab

You can see that the new shape is on the layer named "Background" and the little red box to the right means the selected content is on THIS layer.

Arranging Layers...

The shape needs to be behind the other poster content!

To do that you can reorder the layers in the layers panel...

Click and pull the "Background" layer to drag the layer below the "Content" layer

When you see a blue line appear below the content layer, release to reorder the layers and ultimately the layer content in the document!

Press Ctrl + S to SAVE!!! Do this often!

Moving items to other layers...

Make a new layer...at the very bottom of the layers panel on the right, click the create new layer button

Change the name of the new layer...

Double click the new layer (Layer 3) and name the layer "Text"

Click OK

With the Select Tool...

Click on the text "PING PONG TOURNAMENT"

All of the text on the page is grouped to make it easier.

Notice the Blue square to the right of the "Content" layer

Click the Blue Square and pull it to the "Text" layer...

Now the text is on the green "Text" layer!

Note: the item selected has keylines/anchor points which match the color of the layer

Press Ctrl + S to SAVE!!! Do this often!

Locking the layer

Sometimes it is helpful to lock a layer so you can't accidently move something on the layer...

In the layers panel, click the blank area to the right of the “eye” icon in the background layer

When locked: You should see a LOCK icon!

NOW...

Take a few minutes to add and new layer. Rename it "Champion"

TIP: To ARCH...Select the text with the Select Tool

Click OBJECT...Envelope Distort...Make with Mesh

TIP: To change the color to a warped item, you must be on EDIT CONTENTS (In the Properties Panel)

Then using the TEXT tool, select all of the text

In the Properties panel, click the Fill color and select WHITE!

SHOW ME ON YOUR SCREEN!!

Do not close Illustrator until your work is verified!!!

Being able to add and rename layers helps you organize and manage your content.

As you get more comfortable with layers, you'll find that adding and renaming them is especially useful for complex projects that use multiple objects and elements!

To save computer memory for other students using the computers....

We will CLOSE THE PROGRAM!

Click the X on the top right corner of Illustrator!
