Lessons have been assigned to them based on their diagnostic test results both in Math and Reading. Within each lesson are brain break games. The district is pushing a goal of 45 minutes per week on Online Lessons in ELA and 45 minutes per week in Math to close the gaps found in the diagnostic. Math and ELA are providing some of that time during the week, but not all.

Get to know Photoshop!

What you NEED to know!!!!

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Adobe Photoshop

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Adobe Photoshop, computer application software used to edit and manipulate digital images. Photoshop was developed in 1987 by the American brothers Thomas and John Knoll, who sold the distribution license to Adobe Systems Incorporated in 1988.

HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED:  You will practice different tools and techniques and gradually show your success!

Improve a product shot with a white background by using a layer mask to add a new background image and a blend mode to keep the original shadows.

We need to grab a file first!

This will save the file to your Arts and Media folder!

Quick Tip! After you click the download button, notice on the top right corner the download should appear...simply click the file to open!

Choose Select>Subject

This command automatically detects the main subject in a photo and creates a selection around it

Tip: Make sure the Headphones layer is selected!

Be patient!

Hmmmm.

The Select Subject command did a good job of selecting the shape of the head[hones, but it included the white area in the middle. This needs to be SUBTRACTED from the selection!

Quick selection tool...

Select the Quick Selection tool

Click SUBTRACT Icon

The 3rd icon from the left on the top left is the SUBTRACTION icon!

This configures the tool to subtract from the current selection!

Drag over the white area in the middle of the headphones

This will subtract that area from the inital selection!

Add Layer Mask!

In the layers panel, click the add layer mask icon!

This willhide the white background in the headphones image!

What about the shadow?

On the top, click Layer>New>Layer via Copy to duplicate the Headphones Layer

The keyboard shortcut for this is Ctrl + J

Click on the ORIGINAL black and white layer mask thumbnail of the original Headphones Layer

A highlight border appears around the mask thumbnail indicating it is active!

Choose Image>Adjustments>Invert

This Inverts the Black and White tones of the original Headphones layer mask, hiding the headphones and revealing the white background including the shadows!

Shortcut: Ctrl + I

Open the Blend Mode Menu...

On the Layers Panel, click the "Normal" pulldown (this is the Blend Mode) Multiply

This will hide the white pixels and only show the dark tones, which reveal the original shadow of the headphones!

Now

Choose Layer (Top Menu)> New Adjustment Layer>Levels

Click the box

"Use Previous Layer to create Clipping Mask."

This will cause the Levels adjustment layer to affect only the Headphones shadow layer below it and NOT the rest of the composite!

Properties Panel

Move the top center slider (In the Levels Panel) to about 0.65 to darken the shadow so it is more visible on the surface of the wooden table!

This technique works well with product photos that have a white background, where you want to use the original shadows from the white background on a new background image!
