Lessons have been assigned to them based on their diagnostic test results both in Math and Reading. Within each lesson are brain break games. The district is pushing a goal of 45 minutes per week on Online Lessons in ELA and 45 minutes per week in Math to close the gaps found in the diagnostic. Math and ELA are providing some of that time during the week, but not all.

What do you think is the

WHAT IS ILLUSTRATOR?

What you NEED to know!!!!

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Adobe Illustrator

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor and design program developed and marketed by Adobe Inc. Originally designed for the Apple Macintosh, development of Adobe Illustrator began in 1985.

HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED:  You will practice different tools and techniques and gradually show your success!

Adobe Illustrator

We need to grab a file first!

Click the Ai Image on the left!

Left click the DOWNLOAD button on the top right

This will save the file to your Arts and Media folder!

Quick Tip! After you click the download button, notice on the top right corner the download should appear...simply click the file to open!

SAVE (as) YOUR DOCUMENT!

Shortcut: Shift + Ctrl + S

Save to the YOUR COMPUTER!!!

Save to YOUR COMPUTER!

Click the Save on Your Computer button

On the left click THIS PC

Select Desktop

Select Arts and Media Folder

Name the document:

"First Name Last Name Robot"

Click SAVE

Illustrator OPTIONS...

Version: Illustrator 2020

click OK

With the document open...

Click on VIEW (on the top menu) and select Fit Artboard in Window!

Select the Selection tool

Select the white triangle

The box around the triangle is called the bounding box. This is important for editing shapes and should be on by default.

(If you don't see the bounding box: choose view> see bounding box)

Click anywhere on the red space to deselect.

LET'S MAKE SURE SMART GUIDES ARE ON!!!

Choose view> Smart Guides to turn them on

As you move your cursor around you should see magenta lines.

Remember! You are only using SHAPES to create the robot...NOT THE PEN TOOL!

Now lets draw a rectangle/square

In the tools box on the left select the rectangle tool

TIP: Once you have selected the rectangle tool, check your properties! Make the Fill WHITE and the Stroke NONE!

Bring the pointer out to the document window and move it around.

As you move it you might see these magenta lines. These are SMART GUIDES and they help you align content.

(If you don't see the smart guides: choose view> Smart Guides to turn them on)

Starting on the dashed line, press and drag to create a square. To make a perfect square, hold the shift key down!

As you drag with the smart guides on, you'll see a gray label appear that gives you measurements like width and height.

Most of the shapes you draw are called live shapes, which means you can resize and move them without changing tools.

For instance, this shape we just drew, move the pointer over one of the corners of the rectangle (square) and when the pointer changes, click and drag to reshape it

Tip: To make a square hold the shift key down, this makes any shape proportional (like a perfect circle when using the ellipse tool)

Now notice the small widgets in each corner of the shape.

Drawing any of these with the shape selected will let you create rounded corners

So drag any one of the corner widgets to the center of the shape just a little to see the corners become rounded,

Press Ctrl + S to SAVE!!! Do this often!

Lets create another shape

To select another shape tool, press and hold the rectangle tool in the tools panel on the left to show the shape menu

Select the POLYGON TOOL

Remember! You are only using SHAPES to create the robot...NOT THE PEN TOOL!

Starting roughly in the center of the dotted triangle, click and drag to make a shape.

Shapes you create from this tool are drawn from the center.

When the shape is a little bigger than the dotted triangle, press and hold the shift key to straighten it. (Don't worry we will change it to a triangle!)

Release the mouse button, and THEN the shift key!

Polygons also have shape options like rectangles...

For instance, this side widget controls the number of sides on a polygon

Drag the side widget up until it has 3 sides!

TIP: To move an shape with the drawing tool selected, drag it from the little circle in the center and position it where you need it!

Lets create a circle...

Press and hold on the polygon tool (the last tool you selected) and choose ELLIPSE TOOL

Down here, drag to create a circle

As you drag watch for these hinting crosshairs which mean a perfect circle (or hold the shift key as you draw)

Release the mouse button when you see them, and the circle is roughly the size of the dotted lined circle.

Press Ctrl + S to SAVE!!! Do this often!

Lastly

You will create this triangle shape by copying and pasting the triangle you already drew

Select the selection tool in the tools panel on the left (or press V)

Click the triangle you created

In Illustrator, some shortcuts work the same:

Copy:

Paste:

Drag the pasted triangle down to the circle

To resize this triangle, drag the point on the right side to the left so that it is narrower first.

Then drag the top point down to make it shorter

Then drag the shape onto the guided dotted lines.

Grouping objects!

With the Selection Tool selected click on the circle.

Hold the SHIFT key down, and click on the small triangle below the circle.

Press Ctrl + G on your keyboard to group

Press Ctrl + S to SAVE!!! Do this often!

ASSIGNMENT!!!

You have some experience with shapes in Illustrator, continue to explore by creating te shapes for this robot!

Using some of the shapes we just learned, create the robot on the right!

It consists of rectangles, circles and polygons!

The dotted guides will help you to see which shapes to create where!

When the shapes have a fill it is hard to see the guidelines!

Select NO fill and a Black or White stroke BEFORE making shapes!

Rotating objects...

You will need to rotate the antenna for the robot!

Press Ctrl + S to SAVE!!! Do this often!
